Before you begin:

  • Make sure you are connected to the "MIT Secure" wireless network. You cannot print from the "MIT Guest" network and you may run into issues on "MIT".

  • To configure a printer for your non-J-PAL computer, you might need administrator access. If you have a local IT department, you might need their assistance.


Windows Users:

  1. Windows 10: (a) Click Search (next to Start), type "printers" and then click Printers & scanners.

  2. Windows 7: (a) Click Start. (b) Select Devices and Printers.

  3. Windows 10: Click Add a printer or scanner.

  4. Windows 7: Click Add Printer.

  5. Windows 7: Select Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer, then click Next.

  6. Scroll down and click The printer that I want isn't listed, then click Next.

  7. Note: If asked if you want to allow this app to make changes, click Yes.

  8. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname, then click Next.

  9. In the Hostname or IP address box, enter the printer name for the printer you want to add as listed below, then click Next.

  10. Note: If asked about additional port information, leave the default selection and click Next.

  11. Select the type of printer you are using, then click Next.

  12. Note: If asked about which version of the driver to use, leave the recommended selection and click Next.

  13. On the "Type a printer name window," do the following:

  14. In the Printer name box, enter a name for your printer so you can identify it.

  15. If you want to make this printer your default printer, check Set as the default printer.

  16. Click Next.

  17. On the Printer Sharing window, select Do not share this printer and click Next.

  18. On the "You've successfully added" window, do the following:

  19. Click Print a test page.

When you have successfully printed a test page, click Finish.


Mac Users:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  2. Click the Printers & Scanners (or Print & Fax) icon.

  3. Underneath the list of available printers already on your Mac, click the plus (+) sign.

  4. To add a printer using IP (Internet Protocol), on the top menu bar, select IP (Globe Icon).

  5. From the Protocol drop-down list, leave Internet Printing Protocol - IPP selected or use LPD for older printers.

  6. In the Address box, enter the printer name for the printer you want to add as listed below

  7. In the Name box, enter a descriptive name for the printer (for example, Color Laser Printer), so you can identify it in the Printer pop-up menu.

  8. From the Use drop-down list, select a printer model.

  9. Select a model name from the models listed and click OK.

  10. Click Add.

  11. Select your printer's options from the list, then click OK.

  12. The Printer List window appears with all the names of the printers you added. Your default printer is listed in bold text.


To change your default printer, select the printer you want from your Default printer drop-down list.
